Great Photo Must-Haves – Characteristics of Great Photographs
While there are not strict rules when it comes to learning about photography, practice often dictates how we can produce great and stunning photographs. One of the most basic ideas is to allow your photos to have a specific purpose. This can mean that your photo was taken in order to tell a story, to capture a special moment, or just to show something beautiful and worthy of attention. Here are some of these characteristics that need to be developed in your photos.
Has Great Composition
Great compositions can be created in a single shot and they can be created using various methods, styles and techniques. Great composition is important because it makes your photos worth keeping or looking at. Now, it does not really matter what style or technique you use, the important thing is that the end-result would show solid composition at all times.
Captures Emotions
The best photos, in most cases, are those which have captured various emotions. Humans are capable of a lot of emotions and capturing them on film is probably one of the most popular art out there. Whether you are showing laughter, grief, confusion or even anger, make sure that each of your photo captures emotions as these are what makes your photos attractive and valuable.
Tells of a Story
You do not need to cover big social events just so you can capture images that tell stories. Yes, photojournalism is all about stories but a single shot of a child crying over spilt ice cream can be a great shot. Be sure that all your photos tell stories so that it can be unique on its own. Allow your photos to tell stories about family, about conflicts, about social problems, and even about beauty or madness. The key is to make each shot interesting and worth keeping because within those pixels or ink dots are hundreds of words that tell of an interesting tale.
Never Reveals Everything
While your photos should indeed tell of a story, it should also leave some things to the imagination. This can make your shots more interesting. Instead of showing your entire subject in plain sight, why not experiment with lighting and shadows to obscure some parts? A great photo should not always be plain and simple; it should also allow the viewer to let his imagination flow. Not only is your photo given more value this way, but it sustains the interest that is piqued.
Juxtaposes Contrasting Ideas and Concepts
A lot of great photos are remembered because of the contrasts presented within. By juxtaposing contrasting colors, concepts and objects, you make your photo more interesting. Try to include this characteristic into some of your photos and you will be surprised at how great the effect would be.
Creative and Innovative with Light and Colors
A photographer must be creative and innovative enough to try out not just what is taught, but also what is created in the imagination. Try experimenting around with light, colors and objects so you can create unique and highly interesting shots.
